Dolly

Dolly the pony was surrendered to Big Ears as part of a deceased estate in April 2015. She is best mates with Waffles the miniature donkey. Dolly is very mischevious and is always leading Waffles into some sort of trouble.

Sponsorship of Dolly is $200.00 per year which goes towards her hoof trimming, vaccinations and parasite control.

Indy

Indy the Clydesdale horse arrived at the sanctuary on the 31st August 2015. Indy is 24 years old and stands 15.1 hands high. She was settled into a paddock on her own for a few days before meeting ponies Bonnie and Louise a few days later. She loves a long brush and a carrot or two and walks well with humans although she does have a little arthritis.

Indy’s owner could no longer give her the attention she needed with work, family and three young children. A forever home is what her owner was looking for without fear of  Indy being used for breeding as she is a fine example of a Clydesdale. It was an emotional day when her owner said goodbye.

Indy can be sponsored for $200 per year that will go towards her dental checks, hoof trimming and parasite control.

Indy would like a few sponsors as she is very keen on fresh carrots.

Pixie

Pixie the pony came to live at the Sanctuary with her sister Sunny about 3 years ago. Pixie’s human was quite elderly and into her 90’s and unfortunately had to surrender her ponies as she could no longer care for them as she needed to. Pixie’s human wanted her to live out her days with Sunny and that is exactly what she is doing at Big Ears.

Pixie is a sweet and inquisitive girl and sometimes a bit unsure of humans. She has the most beautiful and wild mane.

Pixie’s sponsorship is $200.00 a year which goes towards 6 weekly hoof trimming, worming, and a yearly visit from the equine dentist.

Ponies are a high maintenance animal especially around spring time when the risk of them ‘foundering’ is high. ‘Foundering is a painful condition in the hoof that can leave many ponies lame. It comes about from eating the fresh spring grass which is full of carbohydrates and sugars – the enemy of every pony. This is why you will see many ponies in barren paddocks in spring ‘diet paddocks’ as they are known, to help prevent this painful condition.

Pixie is lucky that she has not yet foundered whilst in our care but it can happen so easily and we always have to be vigilant which is also why the ponies have regular hoof care.

Sunny

Sunny the pony is a sweet girl who loves a good brush. Sunny came with Pixie to live at the Sanctuary after their elderly humans could no longer care for them.

Sponsorship of Sunny is $200.00 a year and goes towards her 6 weekly hoof trimming, health/vet check, grooming, worming and equine dentist visit.

Ponies are high maintenance animals, especially in Spring when they have a tendency to founder (a painful condition of the foot brought on by too many sugars which is found in fresh green spring grass).
