Running a sanctuary takes more than pats, cuddles and kisses. It also takes a lot of money. As a not for profit registered charity we rely on the goodwill of those who care about animals. Every day expenses include feed, shelters, medication, cleaning, veterinary assistance, and fencing. These costs add up and any donation, no matter how big or small, will help the animals. We are a No Kill Sanctuary which means that animals that are not suitable to be re-homed, or have special needs stay here for the remainder of their lives.
Sponsorship does not cover the full cost of caring for the animals, nor does it take into account their feeding costs. It is with this in mind that Big Ears encourages the animals to be sponsored by more than one sponsor.
We understand that an upfront payment doesn’t suit everybody so for less than most people spend on coffee you can choose ongoing monthly payments from as little as $5.00 per month.
Sponsors are sent a laminated certificate with the name and photo of the sponsored animal thanking them for their sponsorship as well as a Big Ears sticker.
Big Ears would really love some corporate sponsorship to help with ongoing costs. 100% of all donations is spent on the animals – there are no wages paid, all staff are volunteers.
Pete was found last night (23/11/19) on the side of the road in the Tasmania countryside, hunched over and helpless. He was in an area where there were no other goats so had most likely been dumped. When the kind lady who saw him stopped and took a closer look she discovered he had a broken rear right leg, most likely the reason for him being dumped.
Pete was wearing a collar that was also extremely tight.
Pete came to us and we got him straight to the after hours vet where x-rays revealed the leg was broken and he underwent surgery to re-set the leg and have it cast and bandaged.
The vet bill was costly as it was all performed after 8pm on a Saturday night.
Pete needed some extra attention for the next few weeks with pain relief, bandage management and controlled exercise. He slowly got better and developed a spring in his step.
Pete has now blossomed into a beautiful healthy boy now. He has a best friend called Adam and loves living in his goat herd.
You can sponsor Pete for $100.00 for 12 months or choose to give a monthly donation for just $10.00 a month. Sponsorship goes towards his health checks, nail trims and regular worming.
Adam the goat arrived at Big Ears on the 19th October 2018. He had been dumped in the bush down a forestry track in north west Tasmania. His kind rescuer called him Adam and contacted us for his relocation.
He is always the first to greet us at the gate with a big toothy grin.
You can sponsor Adam for $100.00 for 12 months or choose to give a monthly donation for just $10.00 a month. Sponsorship goes towards his health checks, nail trims and regular worming.
George arrived at Big Ears on the 23rd October 2017. He was surrendered by an older lady who was selling up her country acreage and moving into the city as she was no longer able to look after her property and animals. He came with two others called Quincy and Miles. They had been named after jazz musicians but so far we haven’t heard any musical notes emanating from them except baiaiaiaiaiah.
They were the best of friends but Miles passed in 2019 and Quincy passed in June 2021. George now happily mingles with the other members of the goat herd
You can sponsor George for $100.00 for 12 months or choose to give a monthly donation of just $10.00 a month. Sponsorship goes towards his vet checks, vaccinations and parasite control.
Albert has called Big Ears home since May 2016. He needed to be rehomed as he was a ‘rig’ which meant although he was technically de-sexed, he had an undescended testicle and was able to impregnate female goats. He was also very smelly and had some disgusting habits. His previous owner couldn’t afford to have him de-sexed surgically so he came here to live.
After a successful surgery removed his undescended testicle he is now smell free and friendly and lives in the goat herd.
You can sponsor Albert for $100.00 for 12 months or choose to give a monthly donation of just $10.00 a month. Sponsorship goes towards his vet check, vaccinations and parasite control.
Gerald came to the sanctuary in March 2015. He had been lovingly hand reared after having a broken leg as a kid. His owner was unable to keep Gerald as she lived in suburbia and was moving interstate.
Gerald is a cuddly goat that loves pats and will bleat for attention. He loves living in the Big Ears goat herd and is often seen hanging around with new goat Adam.
You can sponsor Gerald for $100.00 for 12 months or choose to give a monthly donation of just $10.00 a month.
Sponsorship goes towards his vet check, vaccinations and parasite control.
Dougal was born at the Sanctuary on the 9th October 2016 with his brother Dexter. Their mother Shandi had been rescued by the Sanctuary two months prior due to a chronic footrot condition. It was unknown that Shandi was pregnant so it was a total surprise to Big Ears volunteers when Dexter and Dougal arrived,
Both are happy goats that are always up to mischief and love playing ‘king of the castle’.
You can sponsor Dougal for $100.00 for 12 months or choose to give a monthly donation of just $10.00 a month. Sponsorship goes towards his vet check, vaccinations and parasite control.
