HOW TO HELP
Running a sanctuary takes more than pats, cuddles and kisses. It also takes a lot of money. As a not for profit registered charity we rely on the goodwill of those who care about animals. Every day expenses include feed, shelters, medication, cleaning, veterinary assistance, and fencing. These costs add up and any donation, no matter how big or small, will help the animals. We are a No Kill Sanctuary which means that animals that are not suitable to be rehomed, or have special needs stay here for the remainder of their lives.
Big Ears would really love some corporate sponsorship to help with ongoing costs.
100% of all donations is spent on the animals - there are no administrative or staff costs.
Remember - Big Ears has deductible gift recipient status which means -
Donations are tax deductible for you.
Look out for Big Ears donation tins at the following supportive businesses:

Clarence is a very handsome and talkative pig. He has been a resident of Big Ears for many years now and will live out his days here. His previous human loved him very much but did not understand his piggy needs and thus treated him as an overindulged child. Clarence came to the Sanctuary as severely obese, unable to open his eyes and to walk. After 18 months of intensive medical attention and love, Clarence dropped 80 kilograms and started to eat and behaviour like a pig again. Clarence loves grapes and all fruit. He shares his life with Trixie and Frankie and loves nothing better than to snooze in the sun. Clarence can be sponsored for $100 for a 12 month period. | ![]() |
This is Bob (formerly known as Blob), normally a cheeky little dude, here he looks a little surprised at having his picture taken. Bob arrived on Easter Sunday after a family had rescued him from the middle of the road. The family were on their way to a camping site and took little Bob with them as they didn't think he looked old enough to fend for himself. Bob had a great time sleeping with the children, living in pockets and jumpers and all around winning over the hearts of his new family. However, when Bob and his human family returned to their home they found that their cat and dog were showing a little bit too much interest in Bob as were the neighbours cats. Bob needed to find a new home or be released. The family were not sure what was best for him given they had tamed him so they approached Big Ears and we agreed to take him in. Bob is a delightful character, very inquisitive and full of love and affection. He can literally enjoy his head being petted for 10 minutes or more. Needless to say he is a very special little fellow. Bob can be sponsored in the following ways $60.00 a year for his annual health check and vaccination. and/or $130.00 for his neuter operation. |
Daisy is one of 10 female piggies that live together. She and her siblings were surrendered after they all became unwell with mite problems and had been living in a small overcrowded hutch. Daisy and her siblings are very happy at the large pen they now live in and they can be heard squeaking as soon as they hear the food trolley making its way towards them. Daisy can be sponsored for $40.00 a year which will go towards her health/vet check and health treatments such as for mites etc. | ![]() |
![]() | Holly (on the right) is the sister of Daisy and she is also a very happy little pig now that she no longer lives in such a confined and overcrowded space. Holly can be sponsored for $40.00 a year which will go towards her health/vet check and treatments. |

Nikita had a large abscess removed from her shoulder area. The wound site must have caused Nikita some annoyance because she removed her stitches and left quite a large area open. Needless to say she was rushed to the vet to be re-stitched and has now recovered nicely. Sponsorship of $50 a year for Nikita will go towards her health/vet check and annual vaccination. |
Lowanna is an Australian Emu (not a Tasmanian one as they are extinct). Lowanna lives at the Sanctuary with her partner Burnum. They were being sold as a breeding pair but Jacqui could not bear the thought of these beautiful creatures being in a small area and used for breeding. Both Lowanna and Burnum will not be allowed to hatch any young (this could be quite an experience given that the male raises the young and sits on the nest and can be quite aggressive). The Emu is the third largest land bird, they can reach 1.5 to 2 metres tall and weigh up to 35 kilograms. They are an inquisitive creature and must be respected for the sheer strength and power of their feet which can rip through wire fencing. Lowanna is an Aborginal word for girl. Lowanna can be sponsored for $150.00 a year. This will go towards her food as well as health treatments. |
Natalie was once a 'barn laid egg producing hen". Once she reached 12 to 18 months of age and was no longer considered a consistent layer she was scheduled for slaughter. Luckily, after a donation from a person who wished for Big Ears to rescue some hens, Big Ears was able to purchase a number of these hens destined for death at such a young age and bring them to the Sanctuary. Natalie, like many of her other hen friends, was at first quite overwhelmed. However, it didn't take long and Natalie was stretching her wings into the sunlight ads well as taking a dust bath. Natalie is a happy girl who spends her mornings snoozing under the tree branches and then she has a peck around the yard with her friends.
Natalie can be sponsored for $35.00 a year which will go towards her health treatments. |
Ronnie is one of 3 fluffy white roosters that live together and call Big ears their forever home. Ronnie and his siblings needed to find a new home after he was no longer welcome where he lived due to his and his siblings crowing.
Ronnie can be sponsored for $35.00 a year which will go towards his health treatment and health checks. |
Mango the hen is one of many hens that calls Big Ears her home after she could no longer live at her old place anymore due to a divorce. Mango is a very sweet little girl and loves to eat all types of fruit and greens. Mango can be sponsored for $35.00 a year which will go towards her health treatment and health check. |
Socks the bunny is appropriately named because of her little white feet. Socks can be sponsored for $50.00 a year which will go towards her annual vaccination and vet check. |

Joe the kidd goat was found 'dumped' by a vet nurse by the side of the road. He was thin and very sick. Upon checking him out, the nurse found a paralysis tick on him and quickly removed it. He was taken to the vet clinic and looked after whilst his owners were sought out. No one came forward and Joe now calls Big Ears his home. He is very shy and scared of people and he is also very thin. Joe can be sponsored for $150.00 for 12 months which will go towards his vaccination, de-sexing, health cheks and any other medical treatments as well as some of his favourite foods. |

The people that purchased Teddy felt sorry for him because he was in the hot sun and was being prodded at by children. From our estimations Teddy was at least 3 to 4 weeks old when sold which is way too young. Teddy's new parents then asked Big Ears to take him and now he lives happily inside tormenting our other house rabbits. Teddy can be sponsored in 2 ways $50.00 a year for annual vaccination and health check and/or $130.00 for his neuter operation which took place on 20/1/2013.
